About Sensei Michael McCune

Sensei Michael McCune has dedicated nearly 50 years to the study and practice of traditional Japanese martial arts.

He began his training under Rodney Sacharniski, one of the earliest Americans to bring authentic Japanese karate to the United States, and later continued his journey under Master Kenjiro Kawanabe of Japan.

Through this lineage, Bushido of Benson has become the only certified dojo outside of Japan directly under Master Kawanabe’s guidance. Over the years, Sensei McCune has traveled to Japan numerous times to train and has also welcomed his teachers to the U.S., ensuring a direct and living connection to the roots of traditional Budo.

In addition to his martial arts career, Sensei McCune has served as a substitute teacher in Benson schools, giving him a deep understanding of how to help children grow both in character and in skill. His teaching emphasizes focus, discipline, respect, and leadership, preparing students not only for success on the mat, but also in life.
